Pregnancy and the first months of motherhood is an exciting time, although it can be overwhelming and confusing as well. Mothers-to-be and new mothers often feel mixed emotions -- happiness and joy, but also sadness and guilt. Many new moms today are very isolated from family and friends and may not know anyone who they can turn to for information and emotional support. Pregnant women may feel overloaded with advice from well-meaning friends and family members, but want and need support and accurate information to navigate their own path towards birth.

The new mom and pregnant women's support group is a hybrid of group therapy, childbirth education, postpartum support, and group prenatal care with a Licensed Midwife.

This innovative format is designed to give expectant and new mothers just what they need during this critical time in their lives. Co-facilitated by a Licensed Psychologist or Marraiage and Family Therapist specializing in maternal mental health, and Cordelia Hanna-Cheruiyot, MPH, CHES, ICCE, CLE, CBA, a Certified Childbirth Educator/Certified Doula, who holds a Masters in Public Health in Health Education and Prmotion/Maternal-Child Health, this discussion group will address issues such as:

  • Relationship changes with partner
  • Identity Issues of Becoming a Mother
  • Balancing career and motherhood
  • Sexuality during pregnancy and after baby is born
  • Making Informed Choices in Childbirth
  • Coping with Anxiety and Depression
  • Changing relationships with friends and family

Group Prenatal Care with Licensed Midwife

A Licensed Midwife will also be available to provide group prenatal care for pregnant women who have Medi-Cal. In this unique format, pregnant women do their own weigh in, dip their own urine and keep their own prenatal charts. This approach empowers the mother-to-be to take responsibility for her health and her baby. The midwife will be available for one-on-one consultations to discuss nutrition, fetal development or any other concerns. This service is available for pregnant women who are planning hospital births with a doctor as an enhancement to the care they receive. Also available is home birth or birth center birth with a Licensed Midwife. Medi-Cal accepted.

Support Groups meet weekly for 4 sessions per month. They are 2-1/2 hour each session. We have weekend, day and evening groups. The cost is $400 per month. Mothers who have Medi-Cal may attend for free. The locations sessions are held are in Pasadena and Santa Monica.

To register for the next session, please contact us at 323-222-2112 or email

"The new mother support group was so valuable to me as a first time mother. I attended during pregnancy and the first 3 months after the baby arrived. I had a difficult birth and was depressed and had to go back to work right away. I had a lot of guilt and anxiety afterwards so the support of the other women and Cordelia and the therapist was invaluable! 6 months later, me and my baby are thriving and doing so well. This group got us through the rough patch. " - Meghan V.
