Cordelia S. Hanna-Cheruiyot, MPH, CHES, ICCE, CLE, CBA is a public health consultant with expertise in maternal and child health and health education and promotion. Cordelia offers consultation and training for maternal-child health agencies and professionals in California, Oregon, Washington, Vancouver, B.C., Arizona, New Mexico Utah, New York, Florida, and Colorado. Agencies in Los Angeles Cordelia has conducted trainings for include: Pasadena Public Health Department, Prototypes Black Infant Health Program, University Muslim Medical Association (UMMA) Clinic, Maternal-Child Health Access, UCLA Center for Health Promotion, Human Services Association, and more.
Cordelia is an approved Health Education Consultant by Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Maternal and Child Health Division Comprehenisive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP), where she consults with Medi-Cal offices who are developing protocols for CPSP.
Cordelia received her Master's in Public Health in Health Education and Promotion from Loma Linda University and her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Dance from Indiana University. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist, accredited by National Commission on Health Education Credentialing. She has certifications as a Childbirth Educator (ICEA), Lactation Educator (CAPPA) and Birth Assistant (ALACE). Her many years of training as a midwife and experience as a birth and postpartum doula and work in the public health sector in Los Angeles make her a great resource for families as well as professionals.
Cordelia is the Executive Director and Founder of The Association for Wholistic Maternal Newborn Health, a 501 c (3) non-profit organizaton located in Los Angeles. The mission of the organization is to increase access, awareness and availability of MotherBaby-Friendly Maternity Care. We are also committed to social justice in birth.
The Association of Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health focuses on the intersection of public health and midwifery to address healthcare disparities and to engender a more equitable maternity care system for all women and infants. Our focus areas are:
Cordelia developed and conducts numerous trainings for MCH professionals and those seeking careers in maternal, child, and adolescent health professions. The Association for Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health offers many networking and learning opportunities for perinatal professionals. Cordelia is a consultant with several clinics and organizations, helping develop their maternal-infant health programs.
The Association for Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health promotes The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Inittiative developed by The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services, a 10-step evidence -based plan to improve maternity care and substantially lower costs.
Cordelia coordinates an annual conference hosted by The Association for Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health, The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative Symposium in Los Angeles. The 2015 conference will be Oct. 14 and 15 at California Endowment Center in downtown L.A. and via live webinar. The theme is: The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative Symposium - Protecting the MotherBaby-Dyad: Innovation in Maternity Care. Registration opens January 2015. In 2013, Cordelia and colleagues received a national award from The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) for their work developing the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative of Los Angeles County, which is considered a best practice for replication nationally.
The Association for Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health has initated a special project for teenage mothers-to-be. B.I.R.T.H. (Birth Information and Resources for Teen Health) Mother-Mentor Program which provides childbirth education, labor and postpartum doula support, breastfeeding assistance by Perinatal Support Specialists, Doulas and Mother-Mentors. You can make it possible for a doula to support these young women by making a donation.
